We whipped around the tip of the peninsula and had an amazing time! Our toes got stuck in the sand for several days in The Keys. And then we dashed up the East coast of The Sunshine State as things started heating up. The photos below will tell the story of the Florida finale’ through their captions. We visited the shell museum on Sanibel Island. This was my favorite shell in the whole place. But there was a lot to see and learn there.Mike was impressed with this shell bouquet. The entire thing (about 5 feet tall) is made of shells.We camped at Flamingo Campground in the Everglades. When the weather cleared we paddled down a waterway and spotted a crocodile!We made it to the Southernmost point in the continental United States. This is in Key West, Florida. The marker on the right is the magical point. The van is tucked into the nearest parking space that would hold her!This is a Key. It is an area in the ocean where the mangrove trees have captured silt and formed an island-type cluster.We scored a great campsite at Bahia Honda State Park in the Keys.Old and new bridges decorate the drive through the Keys. One road in and one road out. Lots of traffic!Oceanfront sunset dinner in the Keys.The color of the water is amazing! This is a boat passage area.Seri and Zeb found a dog beach that allowed off-leash swimming in Key West. Very unusual in Florida at all.Robert Is Here is a fantastic produce stand in Homestead, Florida. They also sell fresh-fruit milkshakes. We stopped so many times that the parking lot guy recognized us and welcomed us back!The Coral Castle is a bizarre and beautiful location in Homestead, Florida. Made of hand cut blocks and shapes of coral stone.
Mango is a great traveler. She spends the hours on Geneva’s lap. Just dozing off!We spent a night in the driveway of some fellow vagabonds. Mike and Tiffany are building this cool truck into the Gopher Tortoise for their over landing adventures.Two cool people, and two different ways of taking the journey!The Kennedy Space Center is awe inspiring no matter how you view it!If more big attractions offered free dog kenneling, our travel lives would be easier. The dogs spent the day in air-conditioned comfort while we toured. And we could go walk them throughout the day! Very cool feature. And FREE!!An up close look at the Kennedy Space Center Rocket Garden. One of many great displays on the history of space exploration through NASA.We were scheduled to see the launch of a SpaceX resupply missile. We got the free dinner, free t-shirt and bus ride to the gantry viewing platform. But the launch was cancelled at T-3 minutes due to lightening in the area. Very disappointing, but great to get behind the scenes for an event!
Since we were in the area, we spent the day at Cocoa Beach. Remember Major Nelson the astronaut the freed the Jeannie from her bottle. This is the place! Here we are parked in the parking lot near the sand because dogs are not allowed on the beach!We had a fantastic driveway camp with Mae and Zach. They are the new owners of Marigold (in the garage). I am sure their beautiful family will have many treasured memories in this VW bus!St. Augustine Florida is an old, old city with a great fortress in it. This National Park was an interesting stop on our way up the East Coast of Florida.On the road again, with Mike at the wheel of http://www.slowcarfasthouse.comZeb is our official Director of Security. Here he is looking menacing in his dapper hat as he surveys the surroundings from the van doorway!
