Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site (and costumes!)

The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site is possibly the second largest attraction on the Breton Cape area of Nova Scotia (known as Cape Breton) and a fascinating archeology reconstruction and anthropology. At one time, this fort housed a large community in a thriving city. But through feuds with Britain and France the fort was destroyed. It has been rebuilt as a National Historic Site.

This location is complete with costumed interpreters and guides, a functioning tavern, bakery, restaurant and many reenactments and events throughout the summer.  Well done!

We gave a sticker to an unknown van that we parked near. We always share stickers in the wild. We were impressed by the diorama in the museum, which showed (wait for it…….)  a perky little plastic family touring the grounds in their trusty little plastic VW bus!

For dinner we attended a “Beggars Banquet” which included yummy regional food (crab, lobster, haddock) as well as music and full costumes!   Mike would not let me get ahold of the camera!  But rest assured that he was wearing a linen tunic, leather waist belt, woolen knickers, nappy knee socks and a napoleon style hat. Very 18th century peasant-ish.

And for some reason, Geneva really liked these bilingual signs at the museum and thought the cherubs would be awesome tattoos! .
