Dogs, lakes, hikes and glory days!

After crossing out of Canada at Calais we went to Acadia National Park for a brief visit. It was terribly crowded in the campground, roadways, restaurants and overlooks. So we did not stay long. But we did grab a couple photos and we met an awesome van guy, Syncro Steve from Vermont. We chatted for a while (perhaps too long, as his family grew impatient) and then said goodbye. It is really enjoyable to meet other VW people on the road.

Cruising across Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont on the back roads and small highways is a lot of fun. Quirky little towns abound. We stopped for “yummee” ice cream and found roadside farm stands for fresh veggies. We camped at small, state parks and the dogs enjoyed runs in the woods.

One of our favorite stops was Dog Mountain. There we enjoyed a visit to the Dog Chapel , which is filled with notes of memories that people have posted regarding their dogs that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. There is also a pond for swimming, acres of grass to run on, endless tennis balls and a unique art gallery where dogs are welcome. We bought a few gifts for friends and also a new doormat for the van.   But we really, really liked the Dog Chapel

The drive into New York was rainy, but the trees became taller and the forest thicker. We passed through Mexico today, too! Mango slept on the navigator’s lap most of the way.  Spotted this old and odd sign in NY

We spent two nights at Cranberry Lake. The five of us hiked to the top of Bear Mountain. We looked at the USGS survey marker and took a break until the mosquitos chased us back down the mountain.

Then we moved on to Canton and Potsdam. Mike attended college at Saint Lawrence University. He was a wrestler there and then stayed in the area to coach college wrestling. It was fun to see his memories unfold as we roamed the fields and hallways. We even found some old photos! Ahhhhh, the glory days!
