Dogs, lakes, hikes and glory days!

After crossing out of Canada at Calais we went to Acadia National Park for a brief visit. It was terribly crowded in the campground, roadways, restaurants and overlooks. So we did not stay long. But we did grab a couple photos acadia natl parkacadia panoramaand we met an awesome van guy, Syncro Steve from Vermont. We chatted for a while (perhaps too long, as his family grew impatient) and then said goodbye. It is really enjoyable to meet other VW people on the road.

Cruising across Maine and New Hampshire and Vermont on the back roads and small highways is a lot of fun. Quirky little towns abound. We stopped for “yummee” ice cream and found roadside farm stands for fresh veggies. We camped at small, state parks Mount Blue campgroundand the dogs enjoyed runs in the woods.

One of our favorite stops was Dog Mountain. There we enjoyed a visit to the Dog Chapel dog chapel, which is filled with notes of memories that people have posted regarding their dogs that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. the dog chapelThere is also a pond for swimming, acres of grass to run on, endless tennis balls and a unique art gallery where dogs are welcome. dog mountain VTWe bought a few gifts for friends and also a new doormat for the van. The drive into New York was rainy. welcome to rainy new york but the trees became taller and the forest thicker. adirondacks We passed through Mexico today, too! We spent two nights at Cranberry Lake. cranberry lakeThe five of us hiked to the top of Bear Mountain. We looked at the USGS survey marker bear mountain survey marker and took a break, till the mosquitos chased us back down the mountain. bear mountain rest on top

Then we moved on to Canton and Potsdam. Mike attended college at Saint Lawrence University. He was a wrestler there and then stayed in the area to coach college wrestling. It was fun to see his memories unfold as we roamed the fields and hallways. We even found some old photos! Ahhhhh, the glory days! saints fieldwrestling team potsdammike x 2mike at potsdam 2015

  1. Back from Newfoundland and Labrador. We passed thru Calais on 5/5/15 on our way to our farm in Vermont. During are trip saw maybe 2 Westy’s. No rain in countered for 3 weeks we were traveling. Lots of icebergs and salmon jumping up the falls. Provincial Parks are the best. Not close quarters as most RV parks are.

  2. Interesting stretch of travel. Amazing that the ‘boys’ were so close and yet so far away in college days.

  3. That is an awesome connection. Mike spent many years there (mostly in the wrestling room, but also in some classrooms!) It is a beautiful campus. We did not visit Placid/Saranac but instead stayed at Cranberry. Thanks for commenting!

  4. Bought my 1984 Vanagon camper from the Accommodations Manager from St. Lawrence College in 2012….great place and beautiful area. did you have a chance to “touchdown ” in Lake Placid/Saranac Lake area?

  5. The dog chapel sounds like a really neat stop. Glad all still going well. Old school days always fun. Love. Mom
