Swamp tour= the Atchafalaya

While in the area of the Atchafalaya Swamp, there are a few things that really cannot be missed.  Since we already took care of a few of those things, we had one more to do. Here is the swamp list.

THINGS TO DO IN THE SWAMPS=

⊗ EAT CRAWDADS (thanks CJ and Abel)

⊗ TASTE GATOR (thanks again, CJ and Abel)

    RIDE AN AIRBOAT

We found a rough little camping location, one the side of a levee near Breaux Bridge (pronounced BROBRIDGE in all one word like drawbridge)  named McGees Landing.  After settling in to our grassy, riverside camping spot we booked a two-hour airboat tour.  It was great.  Here are a few highlights:

The airboat drives right up on the shore to park. It runs on a huge V6 engine.

Airboat captain- Byron. Very knowledgable about the swamp. Lives on a small house-boat nearby.

  1. The only time we spent in Louisiana was in New Orleans years ago (pre-Katrina). But I have been there in my head many times from reading James Lee Burke’s novels about homicide detective Dave Robicheaux and his side-kick private detective Clete Purcell.
